But can we also talk about how Marshall Mathers is awful and no one cares to still talk the shit he also deserves? No, okay, probably because he is white just saying.
I wonder if shitting on Kanye and Chris Brown will die as quickly as shitting on Eminem did. Because Kanye will forever be shamed for taking a microphone from a rich white woman but Eminem get a pass on abusing poor white women. At least Chris Brown isn’t revered for a catalog of songs about abusing women in addition to having beat a woman. I feel like a lot of people that denounce that Chris Brown should be able to have a career for beating a woman are not as upset with that Eminem is celebrated for abusing & being hateful towards women and then singing about it.
And it unsettles me.
I have never found Eminem’s music appealing. It is unapologetically misogynistic and he even talks about hurting his mother a few times.
Also, he’s overrated. I had hoped he had fallen into obscurity and irrelevance, but apparently he’s still around, making lukewarm tracks as usual. I think his abuse of women doesn’t get as much attention because he hasn’t managed to be a headliner for his abuse. It’s kept quiet, and only expressed in his music, so people take it with a grain of salt.
Still, the OP is right. If we’re going to condemn one misogynistic, woman-abusing dick, we’d better condemn them all, regardless of race.
I think one of the main differences is that Eminem has taken responsibility for what he’s done & said & expressed remorse, now whether or not you believe him is a different part of the conversation. There’s certainly room to say that those apologies are about the court cases that followed with his ex wife & mother. But he has at least done that much & for the most part he keeps a low profile which probably helps too. Chris Brown for me falls into the same category as Mel Gibson or Charlie Sheen, unrepentant & unwilling to accept any censure for what happened. I don’t think Kanye belongs in this discussion for interrupting Taylor Swift & I hate that he keeps getting included when quite frankly he’s the only one that didn’t commit a crime. Yeah, he made her cry, but he kept his hands to himself. What I would love to see is all of these men face a system that actually addressed their issues & imposed real consequences besides societal disapproval.
